Adam Sandler Wins The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

Mark Twain Prize. March 19, 2023. Adam Sandler on Sunday night won The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
On the red carpet beforehand, being interviewed by the Washington Post, Sandler discussed how he has grown to appreciate comedy and sharing memories with friends and family around him.
“I didn’t know that was coming. I didn’t know as a, when I was, you know 22, and so when I was 17 when I started that I would care about families having a good time together, but as I got older I was like oh that’s the best feeling, people sitting down together having a good time,” Sandler said.
The 50 First Dates and Wedding Singer actor continued, “Laughing, I had that growing up. I used to go see comedies. Mel Brooks movies, in just here a theatre and laugh and just be together and that was always the best feeling.”
Adam Sandler is an actor, a standup comedian, and a comedic singer. He has had one of the most succesful careers in Hollywood with movies such as The Waterboy, Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer, Happy Gilmore, and 50 First Dates. Recently, Sandler has taken on more serious roles with Uncut Gems and Hustle.

The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor airs this Sunday, March 26, 2023.
Throughout his career, Sandler has always emphasized his Jewish identity. His charaters have had distinctive Jewish names and often take part it significant aspects of Jewish culture such as Bnai Mitzvahs and Jewish weddings. Some of his movies are entirely based around Jewish life such as The Cobbler and You Don’t Mess With The Zohan.
While on the red carpet, Adam Sandler spoke to People Magazine on the red carpet about his reaction to Chris Rock’s recent special Selective Outrage where, after a year, Rock addressed the Will Smith Oscar slap.
“Amazing,” Sandler said. When asked if Chris Rock went too far, Sandler said, “No, never thought that in my life.”
“I thought he was unbelievably relaxed, funny, thoughtful. Crushed it, was real to himself, and it was as exciting to watch as when the Super Bowl is on. I thought about it all weekend. ‘All right, Rock is doing his thing tonight.’ Sat, watched it in my kitchen, laughed my ass off. Iimmediately watched it right after. It was one of the best experiences. I thought it was amazing.”
