Fleishman is in Trouble is the Next Best Jewish Show

The next best Jewish show. Fleishman in Trouble is the next best Jewish show. It’s funny and heartfelt, raw, and so relatable. Adapted from the recent NYT bestseller of the same name by Taffy Brodessor-Akner, it is a complex drama, a part comedy of errors, but mostly a profoundly moving and meaningful human tale about marriage, parenting, and friendship. Also, it’s a story about love and loss and trying to move on. Let me tell you why you have to watch one of the best Jewish miniseries in a long time.
It begins with Toby Fleishman, the high school science nerd who never got a second look. Many years later, including fifteen in a once happy marriage, the divorced doctor and single dad is unexpectedly and hilariously G-d’s gift to single women everywhere.
Toby, played by Jessie Eisenberg (The Social Network, Resistance), is a good guy. He’s a mensch. An actual Nice Jewish Boy. Okay, yes, he’s a little neurotic and all over the place, but that’s because he’s living in NY, raising (cough, sometimes difficult) kids, and trying to figure out a life after getting a divorce. So, a little neurotic, but also a measured, mature, responsible single dad trying to make things work.
Hilarious, relatable, meaningful. That’s just one reason why I think you’ll love the new Hulu show Fleishman is in Trouble. It’s very funny. In the first few episodes, you’ll laugh, you’ll roll your eyes and then laugh, you’ll groan and then laugh, and for sure, you’ll absolutely throw your hands up in the air in utter shock, bafflement, and bemusement…and then laugh. But keep watching, and you will consistently be in awe of how interesting, relatable, and moving it is.
There are some seriously meaningful and heart-wrenching scenes that are real tear-jerkers. Fleishman is in Trouble is a compelling and resonant look at Jewish life on the Upper East Side.
Lizzy Caplan’s narration is amazing. The best part about Fleishman is in Trouble is that it is told from the perspective of his childhood best friend, Libby Epstein, played by Lizzy Caplan (Now You See Me, Inside Job). Libby unexpectedly reconnects with Toby after twelve years apart. It is very Rothian. Her narration is filled with hilarious adlibs, genuine interest and concern, and loving sarcasm. She is the ultimate subjective and unreliable narrator as a male magazine writer who is now an out-of-work housewife with an ever-present wondering curiosity.
Libby’s recounting takes on the sympathetic male gaze for much of the story. But, as the show gets farther along and she gets deeper into it as an active participant in the story herself, sometimes facing very similar problems as the people she is commenting on, her perspective slowly changes. Her discovery of new information forces her to ask some foundational questions about her best friend and her original take on his failed marriage. In these clashes of perspectives, the show is at its very best.
Fleishman is in Trouble is a compelling and resonant look at Jewish life on the Upper East Side.
In the beginning, through Libby’s eyes, we primarily see a sympathetic narration of Toby and the slow deterioration of his marriage to Rachel. Rachel is played by the indomitable Claire Danes (Homeland, My So-Called Life), who is magnificent. As the show vacillates from the past to the present day, we see long scenes filled with a beautiful modern Jewish courtship and marriage. Toby and Rachel each fill a void in each other. And for a while, we are given a normal, happy, and stable marriage.
The deterioration of Rachel and Toby’s marriage is peeled back, piece by piece. At the heart of their divorce is a clash of values, lifestyles, and expectations that are exacerbated slowly over time by two fundamentally good people who slowly grow apart over many years and then quickly all at once.
It’s a real Jewish show about real people. Fleishman is in Trouble is funny, meaningful, insightful, and proudly and enthusiastically familiar. The reason why I loved this show so much is that it never spends any amount of time apologizing for or explaining away or scared of its Jewishness. It just exists. There is no dark analytical critique of Jewish identity, no impending antisemitism crisis, no sweeping epic. At its core, it is a show about modern Jewish life in America.
The Jewish references are confidently everywhere, from the mezuzahs on every door to the flashbacks of hanging out in Jerusalem in the 1990s; to preparing for a Bat Mitzvah and kvetching about the membership at the 92Y.
Toby’s core friends are Jewish. Adam Brody, who plays Seth, is the third tripod of the Libby, Toby, and Seth friendship. Their time studying abroad in Israel is a significant benchmark for their friendship. Toby and Libby tease Adam about trying to pick up an Israeli girl. Portny’s Complaint is next to Toby’s bed the first time he and Rachel have sex. There are discussions about Toby’s sister becoming religious and Rachel growing up secular, scenes around the Shabbat table, and anxiety about the charity for Toby’s daughter’s Bat Mitzvah.
In a flashback, Libby says: “I want to free myself of every stereotypical Jewish cliché,” but then she says she also wants to marry a lawyer. Fleishman is in Trouble is a show about Jews doing their best, sometimes failing, sometimes succeeding, all the time imperfect, but doing their best. That’s why I loved it.
