Making aliyah with young kids? Here are 5 tips for a smoother landing

We came to Israel 5 years ago. Our quiet, suburban life in Rochester NY came to an end as we stepped off the plane and plunged straight into the Jerusalem chaos. We moved into an apartment we had never seen, sleeping head to toe on two small mattresses on the floor. We had no appliances (we ate hummus and pita for a month.) The streets were hot and unfamiliar. We knew nothing, and we had no-one.
It was the end of September, and I didn’t have any gan (preschool) or babysitting lined up. The school I squeezed my three year old into was a terrible fit, and I still feel guilty that he was ignored most of the year.
We spent much of our time playing hide and seek in the park. My son was too overwhelmed to play with other children – he fought or roared at them instead. I spent the rest of my time schlepping groceries up steep hills in my stroller and dealing with the easy breezy bureaucracy Israel is famous for (sarcastic cue).
Our disastrous trial year in Israel became a challenging, but meaningful journey. We opened a bank account, signed up for health insurance, and got passports. We moved to a lovely apartment and began to make friends. I found wonderful schools and extra help for my kids. My husband jumped into the hi-tech field, which was a huge blessing financially as a growing family in Israel. I learned how to deal with (and even befriend) Israelis. We leased a car and began to take advantage of the beautiful adventure Israel has to offer. My kids now chat away with friends in lightning-speed Hebrew that I barely understand.
I am sharing my experience because I think it’s crucial to have your aliyah planned out (as much as possible). Most olim agree that older kids and teens may struggle socially and emotionally after the move. Younger children are adaptable and learn the language quickly, but that doesn’t mean aliyah won’t have its challenges. Here are 5 tips for a smoother aliyah with children.
1. Find a suitable neighborhood
What do you love about the city you’re leaving behind? What are your preferences and priorities when it comes to your environment? If open green spaces and neighbors who know you by name are at the top of your list, a smaller, friendly Yishuv (settlement) may be what you’re looking for. If you have an on-site job lined up, make sure it’s a manageable commute.
Be in touch with other Anglo (native English-speaking) families who can provide information about your preferred community and may have similar-aged children who can befriend yours.
Keep in mind Israel is a diverse population, both culturally and religiously. There is a range of religious observances, from completely secular to ultra-orthodox. Some communities are uniform, and others are a mixed bag with a secular, traditional, and religious populace.
A pilot trip is a great idea to feel out different communities and schools in person.

2. Research education options before you move
Every kid has unique needs. Some parents prefer to put their kids in all Israeli schools, which helps them quickly pick up the language. However, doing so may be overwhelming and frustrating initially. Consider sending to a school with other English-speaking students and teachers to ease the adjustment. Post on Facebook groups, reach out to neighborhood Anglos who can guide you regarding local options, and be in touch directly with the schools’ of your choice.

If you have a child with specific or special needs, it may be wise to pick your community based on the school that will provide the best help. Some communities have more resources than others.

3. Sign up for extracurricular activities and programming
The good thing about bringing kids to Israel? This country is all about the kids! Every neighborhood is full of chugim (extracurricular activities) that attract kids from various schools. Art, sports, martial arts, or robotics- ask local parents what’s out there and about the registration process. This is not only a great outlet but a helpful way to make friends and pick up Hebrew.
Every neighborhood has a community center (mantas) that hosts events and programs year round and holidays. Call them up or ask a neighbor for the monthly schedule. A bit more about Chugim:
4. Speak about the move and validate mixed feelings
Give your kids plenty of time to process aliyah. Find opportunities at the dinner table or during bedtime to talk about the flight, language, and life in a new country.
Show pictures or describe your new home and neighborhood. Can they walk to school or will they take a bus? Is there a cool park, shopping center or nature to explore nearby? They may feel excited, sad, nervous – or all three! They will miss their friends, school, and home- and that’s ok. Reassure them that with time, things will settle.
Children may be extra sensitive in the weeks or months following the move. Look out for changes in behavior, communicate regularly with teachers and if necessary, seek professional guidance.

5. Be Prepared and Manage Your Own Stress!
Children are sponges. Any stress or anxiety you feel will be absorbed and reflected back in their behavior. Try to have as many logistics planned out in advance. Make a list of everything you need to do once in Israel. Here is a good start:

A smooth transition is not guaranteed. Have experienced friends or contacts handy to help when you need it (and you will.) Find ways to stay calm and positive with your family. Take a walk, do some deep breathing, or play music at home. Go for ice cream or a fun family trip:

Most importantly, take a break from the stress and remind yourself that this too shall pass!
Israel has always been the past, present and future of the Jewish nation. Be it the old city’s ancient cobblestone or Tel Aviv’s glitzy skyscrapers, there is so much to be proud of and excited about when planning to build a life here.
However, aliyah is challenging, and uprooting your family is no small feat. It will take time for life to feel normal, and there will be plenty of bumps on the way. Do your research, prepare as much as possible, and most importantly – laugh it out together. When the dust settles- you’ll find Israel is a wild, fun, and unique place to live. I haven’t looked back, and neither will you.
